This 5-day Mt. Kenya Chogoria trek offers a challenging and rewarding adventure through one of the mountain’s most scenic routes. You’ll ascend from Chogoria and descend through Naro Moru, experiencing breathtaking landscapes and summiting the iconic Point Lenana.

Itinerary

Day 1: Chogoria Roadhead

  • Morning: Depart Naro Moru River Lodge after preparing equipment and receiving a briefing from your guide.
  • Afternoon: Drive through Nanyuki, Timau, and Meru to Chogoria Town. Continue to the Chogoria Roadhead (3,200 meters) and camp overnight.

Day 2: Lake Ellis

  • Morning: Trek through giant heather and forest to Chogoria Roadhead.
  • Afternoon: Descend to Lake Ellis (3,650 meters) via a scenic path crossing streams and waterfalls.

Day 3: Mintos Hut

  • Morning: Trek along gorges and valleys to Lake Michaelson.
  • Afternoon: Enjoy lunch at Vivienne. Continue trekking through the magnificent Castle Rocks to Mintos Hut and camp overnight.

Day 4: Point Lenana

  • Morning: Hike up through Square Tarn to summit Point Lenana (4,985 meters), the third-highest peak on Mt. Kenya.
  • Afternoon: Descend via Austrian Hut to Mackinders Camp for an overnight stay in Teleki Lodge cabins (4,150 meters).

Day 5: Naro Moru River Lodge

  • Morning: Descend via Naro Moru Route to Met Station.
  • Afternoon: Transfer back to Nairobi.

Essential Trekking Gear

  • Waterproof rucksack with day pack
  • Sleeping bag (rated for at least 3 seasons)
  • Roll mats and insulation pads
  • Comfortable hiking boots, light walking shoes, and sandals
  • Gaiters (useful in snowy conditions)
  • Wooden walking stick or ski pole
  • Sunglasses or snow goggles, sun hat, balaclava or woolen hat
  • Warm scarf, gloves, mittens, and thermal underwear
  • Sweaters, anorak or raincoat, waterproof pants, jackets, t-shirts, and multiple pairs of socks
